A very bad fumble call cost the Bengals a chance to beat the Steelers
The Bengals lost, 24-16, to the Steelers on Sunday, and they had every right to be upset with the NFL after that loss.
Cincinnati was driving into Pittsburgh territory late in the game when Andy Dalton completed a pass down the middle to Tyler Boyd. James Harrison tackled Boyd on the play, forcing a fumble that was recovered by the Steelers.
All turnovers are reviewed, and being how crucial of a call that was, the officials were going to take a look. When the broadcast showed the replay, Boyd’s knee was clearly down, and he hadn’t lost control of the ball yet.
Harrison’s body slightly obstructed the camera’s view of Boyd’s arm, but there was absolutely enough to overturn the call on the field.Even after reviewing this call, u can see knee is down, but still ruled fumble. #NFL #CINvsPIT #Bengals #STEELERS. pic.twitter.com/kIn8g25PJb— Dust Valley Sports (@DustValleySprts) September 18, 2016
That didn’t happen. The officials upheld the ruling on the field despite Marvin Lewis saying he was told that Boyd was down.First shot, knee down.— Dan Levy (@DanLevyThinks) September 18, 2016
Second shot, ball out. How is this a fumble? #Steelers #Bengals pic.twitter.com/1BzvOcz2hp

It’s true that replay can’t always be perfect, but it should be able to get these fairly obvious calls correct. While the Bengals still had to drive down the field and convert on a two-point conversion just to draw even, they lost that opportunity thanks to an officiating error.
That’s never easy to accept.
